We can’t provide a switch service for non-UK bank accounts. If you have a UK bank account, you can switch to Barclays by speaking to one of our Community Bankers in branch.

Account opening process

Once you’ve completed your online application, you’ll need to visit us in branch so we can confirm your identity.

  • We’ll save your application so you won’t have to start again
  • You’ll have 90 days to continue your application in one of our UK branches
  • You’ll be able to book an appointment online at a branch and time that suits you

Things you'll need

  • Your addresses for the past 3 years – these can be outside the UK
  • Your current income in pounds sterling
  • Your employment details, including your full company address
  • Your foreign tax residency details and tax number(s) – if you’re resident for tax purposes outside the UK, or a US citizen
  • Proof of ID and UK address (for your branch visit)

  • Your addresses for the past 3 years – your current address will need to be in the UK
  • Your income and employment details, including full company address
  • If you’re resident for tax purposes outside the UK and/or a US citizen, you’ll need your foreign tax residency details and tax identification number(s)(TINs). It’s a regulatory requirement for all banks to ask these questions

You can apply for a Barclays Basic Bank Account

  • No monthly account fee
  • Get a contactless Visa debit or cash card – ATM only (charges may apply)
  • Manage your money with online and phone banking
  • Access your account on the go with mobile banking (if you have a UK-registered mobile phone)
  • Make cash withdrawals of up to £300 (or local currency equivalent) a day (if you have available funds)
  • Receive free Text Alerts to help you stay in control of your money (if you have a UK-registered mobile phone)
  • All communication will be in English
  • As a non-UK resident, you may not be able to access our other products and services

What you don’t get:

  • An overdraft (you’ll need to make sure your account is in credit before making any payments)
  • A chequebook
  • Barclays Blue Rewards
  • Apple Pay
  • Contactless Mobile
  • Account switching (you can’t switch a non-UK bank account to your Barclays one)
